Cllr Maphetle Maphetle, Executive Mayor of Potchefstroom City Council, with sadness took cognizance of the burning down of the historical N G Church (Moedergemeente), on the corner of Nelson Mandela Drive and Beyers Naudé Road. 

The City Council of Potchefstroom extends its sympathy to the leadership and congregation during this time. The mentioned church was establish during the 1860's and was the first NG Church in the then Transvaal.  During the 1913-4 "Rebellion" the congregation split and the "Sappe" formed their own congregation, namely the N G Church Mooirivier.

Rev Beyers Naudé, an activist and member of the African National Congress, in his earlier years served the "N G Kerk Moedergemeente" as a minister.

The Executive Mayor will soon be meeting with the church leadership to extend our warmest condolences and to see if the City Council will not be able to assist in revamping the church.
