The City Council has noted a current tendency of deliberate damage, removal and displacement of road traffic signs, street names and information boards.
This tendency creates additional financial challenges for Council and has a negative effect on service delivery. Emergency vehicles are unable to reach addresses due to the removal of street names and the removal of traffic signs already led to numerous motor vehicle accidents. These transgressions are seen as very serious offences, seeing that people’s lives are unnecessary placed in danger.
In the light of the above-mentioned the fine (in terms of the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996) for damaging, removing and displacement of road traffic signs has been increased to R2 500-00. It also needs to be mentioned that according to Council Resolution: Item C.26 of 2002-05-29 a reward will be paid to people that report these unlawful activities. The following is an extract from the mentioned Council resolution:
- That a reward of 10% of the value of the property with a minimum of R50 and a maximum of R500, be paid for the positive identification of the perpetrator and/or a successful arrest and/or the recovering of the damages and/or the successful settlement of the matter to the satisfaction of Council.
- That Councilors, Managers, officials as well as their families be excluded from the payment of a reward.
- Any member of public with information regarding positive identification of perpetrators of these unlawful acts can call our emergency number at (018) 299 5347.
